SPEAKING OUT: Therapists and Patients--How They Cure and Cope with Mental Illness Today

After her story of her own breakdown (The Prison of My Mind--1969), Mrs. Benziger has gone on to secure a great deal of material covering the spectrum of psychiatric facilities and treatments that are available today, along with short essays on their aims and functions by eminent doctors such as Roy Menninger, Milton Senn, and Phillip Polatin. There are also interviews she's conducted with various people who have undergone treatment. You will visit a once-locked county institution, a private hospital and different types of aftercare (""the touchiest problem) institutions such as Fountain House. The discussion ranges from psychogenic drugs to nutrition, from conventional therapies to more eclectic combination forms now in use, with briefer mention of the post-Esalen innovations. The work is one of definition and description, but her sources have been chosen with care (admittedly the best available--no snakepits) and they are implemented by Mrs. Benziger's very positive sponsorship of what psychiatry can accomplish. Glossary, appendix.
