M. BETTER WITH TWO

A gentle story about a small girl's sensitive efforts to comfort her elderly friend and neighbor, Mrs. Brady, after the death of Mrs. Brady's treasured companion, a dog named Max. Laura and Mrs. Brady often take Max for a walk and then share ""elevenses"": milk, tea, and cake. When Laura hears that Max has died and observes Mrs. Brady sitting sadly alone, she cries, comforted by her mother who says that ""Crying is better with two."" So Laura takes Mrs. Brady a series of gifts--flowers, a picture she has drawn--and then thinks of something better: she joins Mrs. Brady on the porch swing--where her companionship is indeed a comfort--and takes cookies to share. Stock's quietly sun-dappled watercolors reflect the story's mood of friendly concern and small, shared pleasures. Very nice.
