Animal fanciers and Vail enthusiasts might love Moore's mystery debut; others will find it marginally entertaining. Young veterinarian Gordon Christy, filling in for vacationing Dr. Potter, has hardly set foot in Vail when he's called on to subdue a Doberman standing guard over the murdered body of Philip Schumacher. So Christy, a busybody type, starts combining sleuthing with his busy practice--adopting the Dob (now dubbed ""Gala"") as faithful sidekick. Then, when the victim's brother Peter is shot to death, Christy knows that the solution must lie in the well-hidden past of the victims' father, a truly strange psychiatrist. And, with the help of rich black gourmet-cook/Doberman-owner Cletus Knight, meddling Christy pinpoints the culprit, almost becomes victim #3, but is saved by. . . you guessed it. Weak on plot and character--but lots of local color, animal-clinic procedures, and dogs, dogs, dogs. (Moore is also the author of a dog-novel, Something on the Wind, 1978.)
