Kim arrives for her first day of eighth grade only to find that the Welcome Day program has been canceled because the student body officers have been sent home roaring drunk. The Spikes siblings, introduced in The Crazy Gang Next Door (1992), have lived up to their name and spiked the officers' orange juice with vodka. If readers accept this, then maybe all the other preposterous, vicious antics--injuring classmates by throwing rocks through windows, starting a fire in the chemistry lab, stealing an elderly neighbor's car, planting a small bomb in a locker, kidnapping a student and tying her up, etc.--that lace this overwritten novel won't seem like the worst kind of in-your-face, slapstick humor. Williams (Titanic Crossing, p. 865, etc.) has penned an unusually vapid tale, with attempts at comedy that come nowhere near the mark.
