ALBERT'S TOOTHACHE

You never believe me,"" pouts Albert Turtle who claims to have a toothache, and both parents separately reply, ""I'd believe you if you told. the truth."" But Albert, insisting, stays in bed, though his father scolds, his worried mother tries transparently to distract him, and -- most annoying of all -- self-righteous Marybelle and Homer try to score points with their parents at his expense. Only Grandmother Turtle is willing to listen to Albert, and it is her sympathetic question on an evening visit which reveals that Arthur's toothache is in his left toe. The inevitable recognition will be considerably enriched by Kay Chorao's soft pencil drawings, her most successfully evocative illustrations to date, in which her characteristic dreamlike strangeness is assimilated and subdued -- a faint but fascinating counterpoint to the solid, homey textures of Albert's bedroom and the comfortable house he shares with his beaky, Victorian costumed family.
