THE BIG WIND

The unfortunate title aside, this is a very long book (600 pages) full of all the creaky calamities that could befall a beautiful, 19th century Irish heroine of noble birth. Named for the storm during which she was born, Sterrin grows up to fall in love with Thomas, a handsome servant of unknown origins. They are separated--he to America, she to a convent--and then to save the family's Kilsheeling Castle, Sterrin marries a disagreeable, decrepit neighbor. Thomas reappears, a famous actor, and it seems they will finally consummate their love although they will have undergone famine, rebellion, intrigue, murder and madness. The author is an Irish actress and Ireland's first beauty queen, dubious distinctions for the work under consideration.
