For three generations the Nehrus have been in the forefront of India's leadership, first in the long fight for independence, since 1947 as the rulers of a free nation. In tracing the careers of three Nehrus--Motilal, Jawahalal, Indira Ghandi--Mrs. Lamb has outlined the history of India, starting in the early eighteenth century and ending with Mrs. Gandhi's recent U.S. visit. The author is determined to leave no fact unmentioned, but she scatters dates, events and movements disconcertingly; the result is block after block of information, poorly coordinated and expressed in a heavy-handed, tedious manner. Political history rather than biography-- an exhaustive, exhausting survey.
