YUCATAN MONKEY

Natural history, archaeology, and a wisp of a story: Chango, a baby spider monkey, gets separated from his mother and seeks companionship in the jungle. Following his trail we meet and learn about the wildlife of the Yucatan and the ruins of the Mayas. Chango is adopted by a Mayan girl with an American stepfather and suddenly there is an unexpected (and unnecessary) near-theft and a peek into the future where the young girl is a PhD. of archaeology discovering the Mayan Rosetta stone and Chango is a mature monkey leading his own pack. The animals are natural and rather engaging; not so the narrative, which is constantly interrupted by didactic nature lectures. A well-intentioned mixture, too diffuse and tedious to please.
