From the commercial, this is an obvious tip-off to these adventures of intrepid Ben Carlin and his wife Elinor, who wallowed and whoopsed (Elinor's department) from Halifax to London via the Azores, North Africa, and Europe. After a tour of duty in India, Ben decided to go around the world in an amphibious jeep, and nothing could stop him -- lack of backers included. Much of his book is taken up with descriptions of making the vehicle seaworthy, much in pitching through winds, onto beaches and into the hands of perplexed Gibraltar guardians of hospitable Portuguese. The trip, begun in 1948, ended in 1951, and the second lap of the round-the-world journey is projected with a New York finale. Definitely in the oddity line of travel, this leans heavily toward the mechanics of a ""we did it"" situation in a good natured accounting.
