THE SENSUALISTS

How to live on a diet of absinthe and lotus, just twenty minutes out of New York, this anatomy of lust, set in Englewood, New Jersey, involves the fleshly gyrations of a publisher, his searching wife, and his deviant mistress, and puts a glow of sanctity on Lolita. Written with facility and conviction, this novel goes a long way to prove that love's kingdom is a dark place, approached by serpentine turns, and inhabited by demons of melancholy eroticism. Ben Hecht's peculiar sympathy and understanding saves The Sensualists from the category of pornography, and through some curious talent he endows this romp with the aura of a spiritual excursion... Not quite a novel, but a cruelly revealing perception of the unabashed eye which does not quite justify its having been prolonged into a literary form.
