ROCK RIVER RANGER

Pioneering in the 1830's at Rock Island in the Mississippi backgrounds an authentic young story of a boy, Joel McCord, his mother and young sister for whom he must care, and the problems of life in Indian imperiled country. With Mr. Davenport, factor for the American Fur Company at Rock Island, Joel finds work as a gunsmith. Later when a local band of reserves- the Rock River Rangers, are formed to fight Black Hawk, Joel joins, fights too and further earns his right to a piece of land- a reward made possible also by his growing sense of family and community responsibility. Nils Hogner has done distinctive drawings for a steady story that betters the average run.
