by Benjamin Appel ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 29, 1947
The defeat of a liberal idealist, and the deterioration of the man behind principles, in the in policy, to the burea as wanting to resign, gradually loses his courage when Betty, his wife, prefers expediency and refuses to live on the less he will make. Drinking more and more- turning to two- and then three others- in alcoholic, amatory attempts, Matt's degradation is complete as he sells out his only friend, concedes, compromises, and finally in self-hatred, suicides.. A capable, convincing study of tension and crack-up,- only the market is conjectural.
