This is a superior, non-melodramatic western about a trail drive along the Chisholm Trail. Billy Scott, 28, wild with pride because he is about to have his first crack at being trail boss, finds himself as just another hired hand when his boss dies and the boss's widow hires Colonel Kittredge as trail boss. The Colonel is a Bible-reading martinet who tolerates no gambling or liquor. One character, Professor, makes a long comparison between trail driving and elville's description of whaling, and estimates that each hand is driving the equivalent of a whale's weight in cattle.) The author gives each character a ober, rounded background, loads each interlude with trail dore, and thoroughly eveals the nature of cattle, terrain and the motives of cowhands. There is a tampede in a night storm and the Colonel dies under the trampling herd. A stop-over in Dodge City provides riproaring diversion and then it's back to the drive, getting lost and finding the way again, and the sweet, hard work of man's dominion ver cattle.
