AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MODERN AMERICAN HUMOR

A cheerful compendium of short pieces, parodies, and verse assembles some old favorites- Ring Lardner, Mark Twain, Joel Chandler Harris, Bret Harte, O. Henry, and some new- Wolcott Gibbs, Clarence Day, E. B. White, Thurber and Benchley, along with the brasher bonhomie of H. Allen Smith, Max Shulman, A1 Capp, Milt Gross. While Phyllis McGinley, Anita Loos, Emily Kimbrough and Cornelia Otis Skinner, Dorothy Parker, Ruth McKenny and Sally Benson are equally diverting. The material is for the most part regionally and generically arranged, time has not staled its sparkle, and it's pleasant pickup reading which you may also find hard to put down.
