A religiously oriented book of familiar-to-obscure quotations from clerics, scholars and laymen, intended to apply the concentrated wisdom of religious and secular writing on ethical and moral decisions and commitments. Mainly Jewish in orientation, Dr. Mandelbaum's compendium draws heavily on the sages of the past. He delivers introductory remarks to the various sections dealing with moral and spiritual judgments and attitudes, in full-dress Friday evening sermon style, within a traditional theological framework. Relevant, certainly, as most sermons are relevant, given a willingness on the part of the reader to apply general principles to his specific situation. ""If your heart does not want a world of moral reality, your head will assuredly never make you believe"" (William James). Or, he who would receive sunbeams from the wise, must be pushed forth from his own shade (Anonym-us). Dr. Mandelbaum's push is neither worldly nor forceful enough for the general reader. Predictable, capsule inspirational appeal.
