That must be eight thumbs in all--and the reason for this octopus' clumsiness is that he's new to the sea, having grown up in a tank in Captain Pierre's laboratory. Legs is a bit miffed at being dumped by the ungrateful Captain who hadn't even given him credit for the book they worked on together, and he's all at sea in the face of both large-jawed predators and the ""fast crowd"" of fish he tries to keep up with after deciding he should join a group. At last, though, another octopus whom Legs saves from a trap, and who turns out to be an earlier veteran of the same lab, shows Legs the ropes and helps him settle into Octopus Metropolis where ""each day brings new surprises."" Legs makes his way engagingly and bumbles amusingly against a softly colored, attractively watery background, and his droll first person story leaves no doubt that whatever the state of his limbs, his tongue is up to the challenge.
