There are to be two books dealing with the tragedy of Maximilian and Carlotta this season. This -- and a book on the list of the Yale Press -- Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico, by Jose Luis Blasio, scheduled for November 13th. The second book will be reported later, but the outstanding difference between the two seems to lie in the fact that Phantom Crown is a full biography of Maximilian, and that the second book concentrates attention on a more intimate picture of the Mexican experiment....The present volume is a readable and interesting account of the ill-starred youth, younger brother of Franz Joseph, disappointed in love at an early age, married later to a Belgian princess who adored him, pawn of rulers, and discarded by his chief backer, Napoleon III, at the crucial moment in the situation. A good picture of Europe of those days, and of the conflicting forces that made the tragedy almost inevitable from the start. Not an intimate biography, but colorful, swift-moving and easy reading.
