CHAIM WEIZMANN: A Biography by Several Hands

Chaim Weizmann was the first President of Israel from 1948 to 1952. As a research scientist and spokesman for the Zionist cause, he had had ""a proud and assured position in England such as was given to few Jews in the world"", but he chose the struggle for the Jewish State as a personal undertaking, and settled in Israel to pursue his vision with practical forcefulness. The editors of this anthology regard it as ""an informal glance backward...by a panel of Weizmann's friends, disciples, and even critics... to pause and to reflect on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of a great man's death"". The Preface was supplied by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion; the Introduction by Weisgal, who worked closely with Weizmann for many years and is now head of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Factual biographical data is contributed by Sir Isaiah Berlin; Weizmann's early years are sketched by Maurice Samuel and Israel Sieff; his scientific achievements are discussed by Selman A. Waksman, Ritchie Calder and Aharon Katzir- Katchalsky; chapters by Fyvel Weltsch, Louis Lipsky, Meltzer, Abba Eban, Jon Kimche, and Crossman cover his political views and activities, from the time of the Balfour Declaration to his death. An excellent composite study to fill the gap until time provides enough historical perspective for a definitive biography.
