A story of sickened spirits and haunted minds wavers on the thin line of imbalance, probes a problem of mistaken identities and directions, and adds some elements of unreason all its own. For the Saint, the President and Francois Villon, who have assumed these aliases in their retreat from the past, are allowed to escape from a sanatorium by an unorthodox psychiatrist who hopes for a special sort of shock therapy in exposing them to the world at large. They meet Julia Larkins, prevent her from suiciding, and as she shelters them- and saves them- she finds her own redemption. In the weeks that follow, Julia's affectionate guidance brings for each the moment in which he can discard his assumed identity, revelation leads to regeneration, and for Julia- there's the love of a local sheriff.... A drama of the lost and the wayward, this carries a heavy load of torment, a taint of infection not localized to just these characters, and a special brand of faith-healing peculiar to the California climate. Peculiar too is the whole course of conduct of which the instability of those involved is only partially responsible. Or so it seems to me- and maybe thee.
