ANCIENT GREEKS: Creating the Classical Tradition
by ‧RELEASE DATE: July 1, 1997
Into the crowded field of books on Greek history comes this entry in the Oxford Profiles series, a unique and invaluable collective biography from the Bakers, long-time editors of Classical Calliope. These 42 short (2-5 pages) biographies of important Greeks from approximately 700-200 B.C. are organized by era. Every biography includes black-and-white illustrations, quotes from the primary source, a synopsis, and a list of further reading. Every era/chapter concludes with several even briefer biographies of other important Greeks. This is an outstanding resource that is comprehensive and extremely readable, aimed at the high-school audience, but accessible to younger readers as well. While some repetition marks this volume as intended for reference and research, it can also be read cover to cover for pleasure. The Bakers' encyclopedic knowledge of their subject and their respect for the intelligence of their audience are evident on every page.
