by Betsy Drake Grant ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 4, 1971
A dolorous little book about Lucia, eight, and the victim of her parents who behave dreadfully toward each other and toward her before her mother attempts suicide and they split. Lucia is sent to her grandmother in Virginia who is usually dead drunk to the world while she writes plaintive but unacknowledged letters to both her parents. Finally she begins to steal, graduating from an ink bottle to some diamonds, in the hope that she can run away and reach her mother who by this time will have nothing to offer her. A soap and water story hurriedly told and one hates to think that after Lucia has faced all these rejections, there's still another one to come.
