THE AGAINST TAFFY SINCLAIR CLUB

It's hard to sympathize with Jana, president of the titular club, or even to believe in five fifth-grade girls who meet regularly, with notebooks, dues, etc., just to talk about the pretty blond classmate they all ""hate."" And Taffy's return from summer vacation with ""you know whats"" occasions an emergency meeting and a go-for-bust development effort, presumably a form of retaliation. There is also a sexy new male teacher and Jana's embarrassment when he puts her fictitious summer vacation report--she's fantasized a trip with her absent divorced father--in the school paper. Then Taffy snitches Jana's club notebook; the mothers get into the act; Jana confesses about the club and the bust project and the girls make friends. . . . But Haynes never helps you to see them as anything but silly twits who make Judy Blume's Margaret and company look heavy.
