by Betty L.--Adapt. Torre ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 1, 1990
In this adaptation of a story that appeared in a collection published in Beijing in 1983, the Dragon King's daughter rejects the suitors suggested by her father's advisors: she wants a brave, honest man. Young Wa Jing has a dream that leads him--and his older brother We Ling, in whom he confides--to the Princess, who gives both brothers the task of bringing her the Luminous Pearl. Demonstrating his good character by aiding a flooded village along the way, Wa Jing returns despondently, believing that he has forfeited his chance--which of course he hasn't--while greedy We Ling's lustrous treasure proves to be dross. In her first children's book, Torre's retelling is dignified, straightforward, and nicely touched with humor. The story's pattern is familiar, but nonetheless interesting for its source and unusual details, Inouye's double-spread paintings, employing stylized oriental motifs, are lively and bright. An attractive addition to folklore collections.
