I'M VINNY, I'M ME

Orphaned at sixteen and determined not to let the social workers separate her and brother Tim, twelve, Vinnie finds herself swamped by the cleaning, laundry, desk-sitting, and other chores involved in running the cheap 20-room summer motel that must support them through the year. But if the social workers are typecast, repressive busybodies, everyone else--their guardian the judge, the city council members, friends' mothers, the local constable who keeps an eye out, and the state police who give them a guard dog--is so supportive that when Vinnie's not too tired she can only marvel, ""aren't people nice?"" From here it looks like an odd kind of favor they're doing, as Vinnie loses weight and Tim gives up a super lobstering job to help her. And though the trials of going it alone will attract readers, they'll be drenched in suds before the chores are done.
