While not promoting the custom of couvade, this book is based on the premise that the prospective father needs a book of his own to answer questions about parturition. This hardly seems justified since a standard primer such as Guttmacher's Pregnancy and Birth provides the same information. This deals with the basic facts of life from conception on to embryological development, the age of the father and his attitudes - or his wife's, to the delivery, types of anesthesia, natural childbirth, and the ultimate costs. Simplistic guidance to assuage pre-partum pangs, this assumes that the father who will eventually know best, knew very little at the outset. The illustrations, line drawings by Barry Celler, should discourage reproduction of any kind.
