Bill Peet is past master of inventive comic verse with Ella and The Pinkish, Purplish, Bluish Egg, to his credit, to name only two. Randy is a Sad Sack-ish animal trainer and his shy, quiet lions were swept by ""cage"" fright every time they entered the ring. The circus owner imported a muscular lion tamer to bring flash and dash to the failing act. He also brought a whip, chair and gun into the cage and frightened the lions who cowered around and finally roared. They roared hysterically all through the night and kept all the animals and performers awake. Everyone was too tired to put the show on the next day. The owner gave them one more chance and brought Randy back from durance vile as an aged elephant boy. ""And that one more chance was all that they needed/For Randy's five lions at last had succeeded/In overcoming their case of cage fright/For nothing could frighten them after that night."" The illustrations are all in full color with animals and people prankishly caricatured.
