An undisguised lament for our declining environment. To the placid pastoral planet of the fuzzy, moose-jowled little Wumps comes a fleet of fire-spitting monsters, discharging the Pollutians who plant their flag, loose their chewing, flattening, hoisting machines, and set building next to building, overpass next to underpass. . . while the Wumps, gone underground, tremble. Comes the day when smoke chokes the sky and even the World Chief is gagging, the Pollutians search out and embark for a new and better world, leaving to the Wumps the dead buildings, the heaps of wreckage and rubble. . . and one grassy meadow, ""all that was left of their lovely world""; and though the green growth would return, it ""would never be quite the same."" Disenchantment coupled with virtual elimination of the comical makes it a queasy juvenile--and can a Pollutian identify with a Wump when we are so obviously what he warns us against?
