CHIMP ON MY SHOULDER

Given six months to live by his doctor, and fed up with the garish gaieties of wartime Mi Beach, Bill Westley went sight-seeing and stumbled upon the Denis-Roosevelt Chimpanzee Farm and Anthropoid Ape Research Foundation at Dania, Florida. Always a pushover for animals, Bill decided there could be no better way to spend his last six months other than to hunt anthropoids for the Foundation's medical, nutritional and psychological research program- in Africa. This is the tale of his high and low moments while on the trail of man's nearest brethren. It is also a revealing picture of present day Africa and particularly the natives, trapped by European expansion into a new way of life which bewilders them. And there are of course the monkeys- particularly a little pigmy chimp called Johnney who liked his scotch with soda, and who eventually became a sergeant-major in a British Army unit stationed there. The expedition seemed to work the necessary wonders, since Westley is still alive to tell about this more purposeful form of game hunting some six years later.
