BOW ISLAND

A quiet, sparsely populated stretch of seacoast under an ""enormous"" Swedish sky proves the ideal summer retreat for the meditative Johan. His sensitivity causes him to vacillate between a deepening attraction to the local inhabitants (especially Nora, the sturdy fisherman's daughter, and Marvin, a mentally retarded young man with a talent for healing injured birds) and the acceptance of Eric, a brash, worldly city boy his own age. Considering Johan's temperament, there's really no contest, but his keen appreciation of nuances of nature and personality will be communicated to any reader willing to submerge himself in the mood of subdued reflection.
