These bell, book, candle, soda parlor and corncrib doings take place in the '20's in a town called Oriskany Forks where all kinds of notions linger in the air while blood will really tell. Harley Westcott grows up there with the belief, like his grandfather's, that unicorns exist and with the fact of his plain evil aunt Carrie who will marry an East Indian. Of all things. Dark like his skin. Harley will also be divided between Cass and Lil (Lil for Lilith, a witch like her grandmother?) but Cass is country cunning and gets him to marry her at fifteen. Bears him two children, one of whom she shuts up in a trunk. Before she is declared paranoid. The real instigator of all this is a model and an actress but she's no Thomas Tryon by whom she has probably been motivated. All of her fixin's seem storebought and she's kind of tacked her story together in a ramshackle fashion. Like a scarecrow. You'll just have to let your imagination get the best of you for it to work (and the publishers expect that it will).
