by Boyd C. Shafer ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 14, 1955
A book of timeliness on a most important element in world affair today concerns itself with the nature of nationalism, the reasons for and rate of its growth and its present flourishing. The author discusses the illusions, from metaphysics to physiology, which are called upon to account for the beginning of nations and national feeling and notes the place of the nation in Marxist ideology. He turns to Europe, most particularly France, for his history of the ascent of the nation state over local government in organization and loyalty of the people, by conquest or diplomacy. A final section of the book discusses the oneness of biological man and the possibility of even more extensive grouping than that of the nation to suit the needs of present day man for social organization. Notes...There may be questions as to some interpretations here, but the whole is a keen, orderly presentation. But where's a market?
