The collection includes selections by Saul Bellow (from The Adventures of Augie March), Ernest Thompson Seton, Walter Van Tilburg Clark; naturalists Sally Carrighar and John Burroughs; poets Keats, Dickinson, Shelley, versifiers Lear and Fields. Eagles, hawks, crows have star billing; there are owls end doves and mockingbirds as well. The format - with the stories listed on ""the uncooperative bird,"" ""the disciplined bird,"" etc. is rather far-flown; otherwise, the book keeps within and covers its territory well enough, although for serious birdlovers more non-fiction would have been valued. Mr. Aymar has also edited The Personality of the Dog, Horse, etc.
