A PROPER JOB

Brian Aherne was born into a poor and eccentric upper class family whose training, prejudice and reserve stayed with him -- he never thought of himself as an actor and throughout his life searched for ""a proper job."" He was attracted by the ""poetry and loneliness"" of flying but his present wife was terrified by airplanes. Success in the theatre came much easier than did personal happiness and he's quite candid about his long and tragic love affair with Clare Eames and his unhappy marriage to Joan Fontaine. He somehow often came in second in real life as well as in his career which was (mis)directed by a combination of bad luck, healthy self-respect and poor judgment. Now retired, contentedly, he writes about it all in much the same fashion that he appeared on the screen, with polish, dignity and a certain lack of excitement. But certainly there's enough genuine interest for the Hollywood fan-cy.
