THE TRIP BEYOND

Brian Ruud, a Canadian-born evangelist now preaching in the U.S., tells his story of saving conversion and subsequent mission. Walter Wagner, who has been involved in previous books about sinful ways and redemption (To Gamble Or Not To Gamble, p. 250), has obviously contributed a narrative structure, but the overall schema -- the sudden visitation of God-in-Christ at the sinner's lowest ebb, the resultant exultant confession, witness, and call to tell of the Good News -- plus the rolling rhythm of the revival tent are obviously Ruud's own. Son of a preacher, Ruud early on rebuffed ""Dad's romance with Christ,"" plunging into drugs, robbery, sex and jail -- down to the solitary cell where he really read the Bible and ""grooved on Him."" ""Jesus was becoming real to me, floating up from those pages of Matthew."" The warden never ""encountered anything like this"" and from then on it was up and out, seeking out the lost, particularly exhorting kids on drugs to ""mainline with Jesus."" (""Somebody say amen! Somebody say hallelujah! Somebody praise His name!"") A Sunday special for evangelicals in the Amen Corner.
