CATHEDRALS: Stone upon Stone

One of the better entries in this new, French-originated series of pocket-sized books on wide-ranging topics. Summarizing the medieval society that built these great churches, giving specific details of construction, and concluding with activities surrounding the cathedral and a brief comparison of styles in different countries, the author compresses a substantial amount of information into this small format. The full-color illustrations are almost like medieval miniatures in their careful detail; reproduced with precision, they make a fine contribution to both the information and the attractive format. This won't take the place of Macaulay's much more detailed Cathedral (1973), but provides a worthy introduction to it. Index.
