by Brinton Turkle ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 28, 1972
It's a pleasure to see that this little red-haired Quaker's charms have not been dimmed by his strict Nantucket training. His problem here, as parents and teachers admonish, is his habit of telling imaginative ""falsehoods."" (""A great big wolf almost ate me up today,"" he announces during Bible reading). But instead of the offender being subdued and taught a lesson, it turns out that his wildest story is true after all. Obadiah's vindication occurs when the Starbucks attend the annual sheep-shearing fair and the ram he is offered a ride on breaks loose, carrying him into the clown tent and the dancing party and the sideshows -- all proscribed activities for the Friends. In keeping with the special nature of the occasion Turkle's glowing tableaux of hearthside domesticity are supplemented with bright, blue-skied action scenes of the forbidden festivities and capped with the homeward wagon trek at sunset, when little Rachel begs Obadiah, ""Tell it again."" She's sure to be echoed.
