KARATE'S History and Traditions

Aiieeeeeeeeeeeee! The scream is one of the weapons in this art but you won't find much about technique in this short book. It gives what can be traced of the history, which probably originated in China from a five thousand year old method of bare-handed fighting called ch'uana-fa. There are brief summaries of its development in Southeast Asia--Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaya, Java and Japan; its influence in the boxer rebellions and its advent into America via the early societies which occasionally staged mock wars. Karate (an Okinawan term) has become increasingly popular in the U.S. and in Hawaii and there is, the author feels, some danger in this, since the principles behind it are largely being ignored. There is a ""code of ethics as strict as the karate technique is strong."" A reminder and a warning here for a small audience which is growing larger.
