This is the story of Thomas Truxton, best known to history as the captain of the Constellation which played a significant part in the near-war between the young United States and France in 1798 in Caribbean waters. Truxton was a Long Islander with a fierce love of the sea. He commanded the privateers in the infant Colonial navy; in 1798 he encountered and captured the French vessel Insurgente in the Constellation. His was a life of service and dedication, which brought him into contact with Franklin, Washington, etc. In this biographical treatment Truxton emerges as a stalwart patriot against a comprehensive view of the troubled times in which he served.
