ZACHARY: The Governor's Pig

Of all the participants in the war of 1812, none was more active and determined than Zachary, young Boone Hardin's pig. Or at least so the story goes in this account of a Kentucky regiment. When Zachary follows his master to war there is nothing to do but allow him to indulge in his porkish pranks until he either tires of the soldiering life and turns back or, even more probably, until he is converted into a ration of succulent bacon. But Zachary's proficiency as a dancer so warms the interest of Governor Shelby that he is allowed to remain as mascot, a role he fulfills in the true warrior spirit. Bruce Grant has given his pig a score of compelling qualities, not the least of which are courage, charm, humor, and inventiveness. Here is as pleasant a way as possible to absorb the issues of the crucial war between Britain and the young States.
