COYOTE CRY

The coyote, as old grandfather knows, is not the shepherd's enemy but a companero, and Antonio begins to understand this also when he learns that his dog Blanca's puppy has been stolen, not for food, but to be raised in place of the mother coyote's lost litter. Touchingly, if improbably, Blanca accepts the returned, half-grown pup despite its coyote smell, and mother coyote pays a nose-touching night visit to her former charge. Symeon Shimin makes Antonio's finely modeled face the focal point of every picture and bathes it in sickly yellow light which distorts the boy's developing sympathies into unsavory sentimentality.
