BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT

Through the act and aftermath of murder, this follows Jess London, a young lawyer, in his understandable and unpremeditated killing of his brother-in-law. When his initial, impulsive confession to the police is disbelieved, Jess later firmly claims that he is innocent, even to Wiggis whom he loves, tries his own case when he is indicted, and proves ""beyond a reasonable doubt"" that he is not guilty in a brilliant courtroom performance. The acceleration and absorption of the suspense medium- to which the legal pyrotechnics lend more than the usual substance. Smart stuff.
