This should have some general interest, outside the field of religious books, for the clear-cut picture it gives of fifty years span in changing Turkey -- again a background book on a danger spot. Dr. Gates served as a missionary for half a century, vital years in Turkey's growth from a backward autocracy in 1880 to a modern democracy in 1930. This is not an intimate personal story, though there is sufficient anecdote, personal experience, etc. to carry the factual record. It is an enlightening picture of what a missionary's life includes, -- teaching, doctoring, relief work (during war and pestilence and famine and massacre), administration and no small measure of diplomacy. And throughout the record is the evidence of what one man can contribute towards shaping a point of view and teaching Moslems what Christianity at its best might mean. Dr. Gates is well known in the mission field as long head of Robert College. This book should be widely used in mission study classes.
