FABIOLA

The classic novel of the last persecutions of the Christians in Rome of the early fourth century, during the reign of Diocletian has sold for over a century. Now retold for the modern reader, Mr. Doherty has streamlined the action, modernized the style, but retained the interest in a most readable plot. Some readers, especially non-Catholics, will find it difficult to force themselves back into that era of Catholic concepts. The Roman background at times seems artificial and static, the characters wooden, but nonetheless the story of the Roman matron who was eventually won over to Christianity keeps the vitality of the original. Primarily for Catholics.
