MICKEY: The Horse That Volunteered

In the course of research into material for his latest adult book (Double Ten -- see report P. 37 -- for young people's listing), Carl Glick turned up this true story of a strawberry roan who ""volunteered"" in the U.S. Cavalry, and served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. With humor and excitement (and perhaps a tall tale or two), he has retold the story for children. Troop A, uniformly dapple-grey, on its way home to Walla Walla from quieting an Indian rebellion in Arizona, when Mickey appeared out of nowhere and joined the ranks, positively refusing to leave. Sergeant Farlow took him in hand, trained him, and insisted on his being retained. With troop he went to Manila, joined up with General Gam Young's brigade, and became oo good a soldier, adhering too closely to orders, and refusing to accept his discharge when it came. The climax of the story is his discovery of the guerilla's cache of weapons. Good reading.
