A novel of family and first love tells of the McBain brothers, who emigrated from the hard country of Caithness, Scotland, where a man had only his soul to call his own, to Opportunity, Idaho, where a man could make his way in the world. Angus, who had wanted to be a minister, went first; Douglas, dashing, with a zest for the main chance and high life, followed with good natured Willie, who would never get ahead. Their story is told by their nice Kit, who concentrates on her beloved Uncle Douglas as he makes his way in real estate, riding high and sound until the Garden of Eden project crashes beneath him and leaves him a hunted but not yet beaten man. Douglas has luck, but it deserts him with his women too: first there is the carefree Mamie, who runs off with another man but returns years later when Douglas is in trouble and disgrace; then there is the ambitious Sheila, who teaches him to sell his soul to the devil and deserts him when he is down. But at the close, Douglas has recouped, in Oregon, and is again the man of action and affairs, with a third wife in tow. He is a fine figure of a hero as seen through the adoring eyes of Kit, and this is a romantically tinged story for the ladies that has some grace and substance.
