Miss Hickory is a doll made of an apple branch and a hickory nut head. When her ""family"" of humans goes back to Boston for the winter, Miss Hickory is forced to spend the bitter New Hampshire winter in the cold. She has many adventures natural and miraculous, which culminate in a wild moment when a squirrel eats her head and she whirls up into an apple tree and becomes a scion on it. Frankly, we found it long-winded and dull adventures with an air of preciousness throughout. The author is better in recreating old customs than in telling an original story.
