GIVE ME YOUR HAND

Ellen, the oldest of six orphaned children, finds life in the early days of southern Ohio as difficult as it is rewarding. Torn between her attraction to a handsome Easterner and her admiration for Jethroe, a neighboring farmer, she cannot choose. One offers money and ease, at least as long as his capital lasts; the other, the unstinting desire to work. Ellen makes her choice, but not until she has given her brothers and sisters the mothering they require and has frustrated the scheming of her snobbish friends. Then, with the sureness of one who has fully met responsibility, she turns to Jethroe whose richness of spirit far outweighs the advantages of his frivolous rival. A pleasant, home-spun story which maintains a comfortable balance between romance and history.
