More of that laundry tub gossip -- depending on your tolerance for serial suds -- about the Mallen line -- the dominant males are born with black hair with a white streak, remember? who first sprang forth in The Mallen Streak (1972) and now at the turn of the century, by blows, flights, death and quirky affairs and marriages have so tangled the lineage that even Miss Cookson has difficulty in stuffing relevant genealogy into the narrative. This one is mainly about Barbara and her illicit love for Michael Radlet (both are married and cross-pollinating). There's also white-streaked Benjamin, one of Barbara's legitimate triplets, two of whom are expediently sunk in World War I. Ben, emotionally crippled, is nursed back to health by Hannah, sprout of -- who else -- Michael. All premeditated for a predetermined audience.
