15 stories of Old Testament leaders are digested and retold. Each man guided his people as a king or a prophet. Starting with Abraham and ending with Nehemiah, the book includes Moses, Joseph, David and Solomon among others. The Bible used as a source was the Revised Standard Version and each chapter is started with an appropriate verse, chapter and verse references appended. A comparison of these stories to this Bible shows that the retelling has been kept faithful to the essentials while ""begats"" and long lists of things and people have been taken out. The spicier figures, like Potiphar's wife and Hagar, appear briefly and disappear quickly. While cliches abound, their presence here is not offensive for most are Biblical in origin. The author's ability to condense and convey a clear story line within a vocabulary easy for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders is evident, as it was in her previous books: Adventures with the Gods, 1945; Adventures with the Heroes, 1950; and Adventures with the Giants, 1954. Since these stories are of figures shared by she Judaic/Christian community, the book will have the usual library market with book-sellers advised to bring it to the notice of Protestant Sunday School teachers.
