A writer of fine biographies for children now demonstrates her skill in creating an exciting story, with the tapestried world of King Arthur as the backdrop, in her first novel. Melor, son of a minor king, is called to Camelot to become page to Arthur. The author paints a realistic picture of a romantic era; Melor, aged thirteen, wants to be a knight, but is led astray by fools, is forgetful of his duties and is held back by his wrong-reasoning. During a hunt for a fierce giant boar, Melor proves that he is courageous enough to give his life for his liege when he throws himself in the path of the charging beast. He is promoted for his bravery. One wishes that the author had presented at least glimpses of Gawain, Lancelot, and other Arthurian figures, but this is a minor objection to a strong, well written story which does embody a medieval mood.
